We saw the completion in 2022 of projects that 10 years from now may prove to have helped secure growth and a healthy economy for Greene County – the building restoration and opening of the new Centennial tearoom as a corner piece of downtown Jefferson; the new Children’s Center (formerly the Greene County Early Learning Center); and the new Greene County Animal Shelter.
Early steps were taken on other large projects. The first referendum was held for funds for a new Greene County jail. The ballot question received a majority of ‘yes’ votes but not the super majority needed for a bond issue. The question will certainly be put to a second vote in the coming year. Also, after a year of study, the Jefferson public library board of trustees recommended to the city council a $9.7 million, 24,000 square-foot building project to provide a library suitable for the next 50-75 years. Greene County Development Corporation undertook an ambitious project – Neuva Vida en Greene County – to add employees and residents to the county while increasing diversity in the population.
Those projects and countless other events and projects were reported on GreeneCountyNewsOnline.
GreeneCountyNewsOnline is an important part of our community. Since 2014 it’s been the only locally-owned news source in the county, and it’s now the only news source whose publisher/editor and correspondent live, shop and pay taxes in the county. That helps guarantee news is reported with an eye on what county residents need and want to know.
